What is a Periodontist?

    A periodontist is a dental specialist in the care, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gums and placement of dental implants.

What is a Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection oh the gums, bone and periodontal ligament (tiny fibers that attach the tooth to the jaw bone).

How do I know I have Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal or gum disease affects about 50% of adults. Most people don't even know they have it. Periodontal disease is usually painless and silent until the disease has advanced.

Symptoms of advanced disease are:

bulletRed swollen and sore gums
bulletBad breath
bulletRecession or shrinking of gums
bulletLoose teeth
bulletSpaces develop between teeth
bulletShifting or movement of teeth

Can Periodontal disease affect the rest of my body?

Yes! The bacterial infection in you gums has been linked to many other health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and low birth weight in infants. Many of the medications taken today also effect the health of your teeth and gums.

What if I have Diabetes?

Diabetes affects your bodies ability to fight infection. This includes periodontal disease. Keeping your mouth healthy makes it easier to control your diabetes.
